Five need-to-know places in Mexico City

After being away from my country for a while, I cannot stop thinking about the next chance to be there, especially in the energetic and hectic Mexico City.

Once, my friend Matt from South Africa described Mexico City as the New York of Latin America. That description resonated with me and since then, I use the same words when someone asks me if it is worth it to visit the city. From unique stays in La Roma to a concept boutique that embraces the aromatic botany of America Latina, here are some places to inspire your next getaway:

1 Hotel La Valise

The hotel is located in the trendiest neighborhood of the city, La Roma. This renovated building from the 80s captures the perfect balance of the french-style architecture with Mexican antique accent objects. There’s no restaurant, but with Roma and Condesa on the doorstep, all sorts of culinary delights are within walking distance.

2 Tierra Garat

Start the day in this gourmet coffee shop, known for sourcing the grains from the best regions of Mexico. Tierra Garat’s bar offers a breadth of hot and cold drinks that taste authentically Mexican with blends of cinnamon, cardamon, chili and ginger. The space, designed by Héctor Esrawe’s studio and Cadena y Asociados, brings customers back to the roots of the earth, disclosing the untold story of Mexican coffee, playing with textures, detailed decorations and simplicity.

3 Xinú

The boutique located in Polanco, is a must-see visit. The perfumery is inspired by the aromatic botany of the Americas which brings unique aromas to take home. The brand is a total visual pleasure, from the aesthetic of the store to the beautiful packaging of the products.

4 Lardo

One thing that stands out in the city is the variety of options to grab a good meal at any time. Lardo is one of my top ten. The simplicity of the menu balances the perfect fusion of Tuscan and Mexican cuisine, with special focus on fine charcuterie. Simple preparation and quality ingredients are the main elements of Lardo.

5 Audette

Because Mexico City is also a great place for emerging designers and innovative brands, Audette is one of the boutiques in the city that I’d recommend. The brand, created by the French couple Aude Jan and Charles Gout, brings a collection of statement pieces made by Mexican artisans with Italia leather. The leather bags are an inspiration of the Parisian style with the extravagance of Mexico City.
